Setting/Context:
Jesus has been teaching his disciples about the “upside down” nature of the Kingdom of Heaven.
When princes are born in palaces, the King of Kings was born in a manger
When prophets are shown honor, The Prophet was dishonored in his own hometown.
When the kings of the earth tax their subjects, Jesus teaches that the Sons of the Kingdom of Heaven are exempt from tax, though responsible to live and participate in their community
When greatness on Earth might be measured by popularity or importance among people, Jesus stresses that greatness in the Kingdom of Heaven is measured by repentance and humility.

Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus. Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: “ ‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’ ” Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way. Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.” Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: “A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.” But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child’s life are dead.” And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene. In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.’ ” Now John wore a garment of camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, “ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “ ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’ ” Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him. Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.” From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people. So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, those having seizures, and paralytics, and he healed them. And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

“Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.

How do we show our care for one another (internal discussion, “who believe in me”)?
Is Jesus saying that a believer would be better to be executed than to cause someone to sin? Does Jesus expect believers to kill themselves? Or does Jesus mean that our leading of others astray is so serious, the consequences are serious and we need to repent?

Temptation and Response

“Woe to the world for temptations to sin! For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes! And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into the hell of fire.
Who is the World?
Why is it necessary for temptation to come? What does Jesus mean by this?
Similar to our question before about Jesus’ statement that it would be better for the tempter to be killed, does Jesus really mean that we should cut of our hand or foot, or pluck our eye out? In other words, is this literal?

Care for the flock means removing those who endanger the sheep.
Those who endanger the sheep, the little ones who believe, are those who are not humble and who are asking the question, “who is the greatest?”
And, as Christians, what do we do with Jesus’ teaching on hell (eternal fire, and gehenna)? What is hell (Here: Gehenna)? Is it important that we teach on hell?
Matthew Explanation of the Text

There is too much at stake for churches to ignore the critical aspect of church discipline!

What is at stake? The understanding of young and immature believers? Their eternal state based on their knowledge, understanding, and heart disposition? Does it matter that people can be led astray? And, if they are astray (false teaching and idolatry), what are they astray from (the truth of the Gospel of Jesus)?
Matthew 2. Protection from Spiritual Predators

The church must respond swiftly and firmly to such dangerous people, and Jesus demands excommunication for such unless they repent (18:17; cf. 1 Cor 5:3–5; 1 Tim 1:20).

Little Ones Gone Astray

“See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven. What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. So it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.
Who are the Little Ones?

the sense is that so important are these little ones that they have the top angels representing them in heaven, who have direct access to the ‘face’ of God.”

Restoration is the Goal!
Matthew Explanation of the Text

Parallel passages are found in Gal 6:1 (the “Spirit-led” restoration of those caught in sin) and especially Jas 5:19–20 (those who “bring them back” will “save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins”). The latter passage provides further reasons for the joy.

So What?

Conclusion:

the community of disciples that witnesses to the reality of the presence of the kingdom throughout this age.

The Church is the community of Jesus that shows the world what it means to follow him. We are not simply changed inwardly, and spared eternity in hell. Our lives actually change here on earth as a result of following Jesus. Our relationships change, and the way we once would have responded is changed so that our responses may now come from a place of love and a desire for restoration.
Eternal Life - Based on repentance and humility before God and men
Eternal Death - Based on rejection of God’s Law and leading others to reject God’s Law
Discipleship is…Repentance, humility, receiving Christ, guarding the church against false teachers by casting out wolves, and seeking out and restoring sheep who have gone astray.
How do we relate to sin and temptation?
Repentance of our sin, humility before God and men, showing love to those people who are vulnerable, casting out the things that cause us to stumble.
How do we respond to false teachers and those who lead astray?
Identify them and remove them and so protect the flock, be aware of temptation and guard against it.
How do we relate to those who’ve gone astray?
Show them love, go after them, restore them gently because God loves them, and God goes after them, and God restores them gently
